Introducing JustFund Search – Designed with You in Mind
When we started JustFund in 2017, I was eager to build a simple way to share different funding needs with members of the donor network I worked for at the time. The goal was to easily capture information from members about organizations they learned about and were contributing to, share those needs with other members, and get resources to people on the frontlines of social change who were historically underfunded.
Today, we face a new challenge. There is an estimated $234 billion in assets parked in Donor Advised Funds (DAFs) today, not being invested into communities that need those resources. Our latest feature – JustFund Search – is designed to make it easier for individual donors, philanthropic advisors, and program officers to find funding needs and move money where it’s needed most.
How Does JustFund Search Work?
JustFund Search includes dozens of filters so it’s easy to find funding needs by:
- Organizations or funds
- Focus areas, like education and racial justice
- Budget size
- Tax status
- Geography
- Where the organization is based
- The states where the organization works
- Scope: National, regional, state, and local
- Communities engaged with the organization
- Strategies, like advocacy and movement building
- Fiscally-sponsored projects
- Whether it has a JustFunder
JustFund Search allows you to sort results so you can identify the funding needs that align with your giving goals.
JustFund Search offers up additional suggestions based on past searches, most popular searches, recently funded proposals, and unfunded proposals. You can also follow other funders, sign up to receive email notifications about new applications, and leverage JustFund’s matching grants when you make a grant.
Who Will You Find on JustFund?
JustFunders are committed to elevating organizations that are effecting real change but have critical funding needs. They are mostly in the U.S. South (33%), under $500,000 in budget size (54%), working on racial justice (18%), democracy (16%), economic justice (13%), and environmental justice (8%). Between 150 and 800 new organization come into JustFund every month, applying to grant cycles run by funders including Decolonizing Wealth-Liberated Capital, Omidyar Foundation, Democracy Fund, Emergent Fund, Zoom Cares, Newman’s Own, California Wellness Foundation, and others committed to centering equity in their grantmaking process.
Profiles found via JustFund Search include in-depth information about an organization’s work and their common application, helping donors and funders make educated decisions about what to fund.
Over the last five years, JustFund has supported over 140 funders to run their grant cycles, moved over $270 million to organizations and movements, welcomed over 13,000 organizations working to advance racial and social justice, and saved them over 37 years of application time.
